Last summer, we planned a simple two-day family trip to Gwacheon.
Our plan was easy.
One day at Seoul Land.
The next day at the National Gwacheon Science Museum.
Looking back, it turned out to be one of our favorite summer vacations with the kids.
If you’re visiting Korea with young children during the summer, I honestly think this combination is hard to beat.
Today I’d love to share our day at Seoul Land—not as a travel guide, but as one Korean family’s experience.
Because sometimes the little details are much more helpful than a list of attractions.
Summer Vacation in Korea Starts Earlier Than You Think
One thing that often surprises visitors is how seriously Korean families prepare for summer vacation.
Popular attractions become crowded even on weekdays, especially during school holidays.
That’s why we decided to arrive before the gates opened.
And judging by the number of families already waiting, we definitely weren’t the only ones.
Many parents had picnic mats, coolers, extra clothes, and even small wagons full of supplies.
It almost looked like everyone was preparing for a full day at the beach.
In Korea, that’s actually pretty normal.
Parents often bring homemade lunches, snacks, plenty of water, and everything their children might need for the day.
After a few family outings, you quickly learn that packing well makes the day much more relaxing.
Our First Destination? Not the Rides.
As soon as the gates opened, families started walking quickly in the same direction.
Some children were already pointing excitedly at the rides.
Our kids did exactly the same.
“Can we ride that first?”
Not today.
We smiled, promised we’d come back later, and kept walking.
Our destination was Kraken Island.
If you’ve never heard of it before, Kraken Island is Seoul Land’s seasonal water play area.
And during summer, it easily becomes one of the busiest places in the park.
We had one goal.
Find a shaded spot before they were all taken.
Within minutes, we understood why everyone hurried there first.
The good spots disappeared surprisingly fast.
Looking back, arriving early was probably the best decision we made all day.
What Makes Kraken Island So Special?
Before visiting, I imagined something similar to a splash pad.
It turned out to be much more enjoyable than I expected.
The water is shallow enough for young children to play safely, while older kids can still spend hours running around the different play areas.
Our children didn’t even ask about the rides for a long time.
They were simply happy splashing, laughing, and making new friends with other children.
One thing I really appreciated was that parents could easily stay close.
Of course…
That also meant many of us ended up getting wet too.
By the afternoon, I realized I had probably spent more time sitting in the shallow water than my children had.
Honestly, I didn’t mind at all.
On one of the hottest days of summer, the cool water felt like the best place to be.
A Small Tip That Made Our Day Much Easier
One thing Korean parents seem to have mastered is packing efficiently.
We brought a waterproof picnic mat, homemade lunch boxes, snacks, drinks, extra clothes, towels, and a few simple water toys.
Looking back, the waterproof mat was probably the smartest thing we packed.
Everything around Kraken Island gets wet eventually.
A regular picnic mat would have been soaked within minutes.
We also discovered that bringing our own lunch saved both time and money.
Restaurants became much busier around lunchtime, while we simply enjoyed our lunch together under the shade.
Sometimes the simplest decisions make family trips much easier.
Summer Shows We Didn’t Want to Miss
After spending most of the morning at Kraken Island, we finally changed into dry clothes and headed toward the main plaza.
Our children were excited for the rides, but the live performances ended up becoming one of the highlights of the day.
If you’re visiting Seoul Land during the summer, I highly recommend checking the performance schedule before you go.
The park offers seasonal shows that make the experience feel much more than just a theme park.
This year, Seoul Land is hosting Water Wars, an interactive water battle where children can join the fun with water guns.
There is also K-Music Water Pop, a lively outdoor show that reminds many Korean visitors of the country’s famous summer water festivals.
Our children absolutely loved dancing along with the music.
For them, it wasn’t about watching a performance.
It felt like being part of it.
There are also street performances throughout the park, including pirate-themed acrobatics near Adventure Land.
The schedule changes depending on the season, so it’s worth checking before your visit.
Family Rides for Young Children
One reason many Korean families choose Seoul Land is because younger children have plenty of rides to enjoy.
Unlike some larger amusement parks where height restrictions limit many attractions, Seoul Land offers a wide variety of rides designed for preschoolers and young elementary school children.
We noticed a big difference once our oldest child reached around 100 cm (3 ft 3 in).
Suddenly, many more attractions became available.
If you’re visiting with younger children, checking the height requirements in advance can help you plan your day more smoothly.
One thing we appreciated was that there were enough family-friendly rides to keep everyone happy without feeling rushed.

Looking back, there are a few things I would definitely bring again.
- A waterproof picnic mat
- Swimsuits or rash guards
- Extra clothes for everyone
- Towels
- Water shoes
- Hats
- Sunscreen
- A waterproof phone pouch
- Plenty of drinking water
- Homemade lunch and snacks
- Plastic bags for wet clothes
And one more thing…
Comfortable clothes for parents.
You may think only your children will get wet.
Trust me.
There’s a good chance you’ll end up sitting in the water too.
A Tip About Korean Family Trips
One thing I love about family outings in Korea is how prepared everyone is.
Many families arrive with lunch boxes, fruit, snacks, picnic mats, extra clothes, and enough supplies for an entire day.
At first it might seem like overpacking.
But after spending a full summer day at Seoul Land, it all makes perfect sense.
Being prepared means spending less time worrying and more time simply enjoying the day with your children.
Don’t Miss the Fireworks If You Can Stay
We didn’t stay until evening during this trip because our children were completely exhausted after playing all day.
However, we had visited Seoul Land in autumn before and watched the fireworks.
It was one of those moments that both children and adults quietly remember.
Sometimes people think fireworks are only for kids.
Honestly, I think I enjoyed them just as much.
If your family still has energy at the end of the day, staying for the evening show is well worth it.
Is Seoul Land Worth Visiting with Kids?
For our family, absolutely.
Kraken Island alone was worth the visit during summer.
Adding family rides, live performances, picnic-friendly spaces, and a relaxed atmosphere made it one of our favorite family outings in Korea.
Would I visit again?
Without hesitation.
The only thing I would change is arriving even earlier.
Because if there’s one lesson we learned that day…
It’s this:
Don’t skip the early start.

Would We visit Again?
Without a doubt.
If our children asked to go again this summer, we’d happily say yes.
Not because Seoul Land has the biggest rides or the most spectacular attractions.
But because the whole day felt easy.
There was enough space for the kids to play.
Enough rides for young children to enjoy.
Enough shade to take a break.
And plenty of little moments that turned into happy family memories.
Sometimes that’s exactly what parents are looking for.
